D Gukesh drew against Reigning World Champion Ding Liren

D Gukesh, India’s chess hero, drew against reigning world champion Ding Liren in the first round of the Sinquefield Cup in St Louis, providing an exciting preview of their impending World Chess Championship match.

Gukesh recently qualified for the world championship by winning the 2024 Candidates Tournament and is presently ranked sixth in the world, while Ding is placed 15th, his lowest ever.

The game was marked by a few tense moments as they faced up for the first time since Gukesh won recently. According to ANI, Gukesh, playing with black pieces, avoided a potentially dangerous situation by advancing his pawn to the d4 square. Ding Liren had an opportunity to capitalize, but chose bishop d3, allowing Gukesh to escape a difficult situation. Following this, the game witnessed more piece exchanges, which ended in a tie.

The two players will meet again in the FIDE World Championship Match 2024, scheduled to be held from November 20 to December 15 in Singapore.
