In a concerning trend, cyber criminals are targeting women, including professionals like teachers and lawyers, in a puja parcel fraud scheme across Kolkata, Barrackpore, and Barasat. Victims receive extortion calls that follow a distinct pattern:
- Parcel Notification: Initially, victims are informed about receiving puja gifts in parcels sent through courier services.
- Impersonation of Law Enforcement: Subsequently, they receive another call, with the caller claiming to represent law enforcement agencies such as Mumbai Police, Delhi Police, NCB, or CBI. The caller alleges that narcotics have been found in the package.
- Threats and Demands: The caller, aware of the victim’s social status, threatens legal action unless a financial settlement is agreed upon. Victims are coerced into paying to resolve the situation.
- Fake Summons and Documents: In some cases, the criminals send fake summons, complete with police and court logos, to bolster the legitimacy of their claims. This tactic is used to further pressure victims.
- Ongoing Ransom Calls: Disturbingly, even after paying a ransom, victims continue to receive ransom calls, indicating a persistent and audacious criminal operation.
The fraudsters employ various tactics to maintain control over victims, including discouraging them from discussing the case with others to protect their reputation.
Modus Operandi and Warning from Kolkata Police:
Kolkata Police has issued a warning regarding this modus operandi. The criminals posing as enforcement officials manipulate victims by claiming that a parcel with suspicious items bearing their name has been intercepted. They instruct victims to download video-calling apps and display the parcel, sending counterfeit documents with government seals.
Furthermore, the fraudsters convince victims to fill out online forms through provided links or download remote control applications. This process allows the criminals to gain access to victims’ bank accounts, further compounding the financial losses suffered by the victims.
In light of these incidents, Kolkata Police advises caution and encourages individuals to remain vigilant. They urge people not to engage with suspicious calls or share personal information, especially related to their financial accounts. Staying informed and aware is essential in protecting oneself from such fraudulent schemes.
