Former Pakistan cricketer Mohammad Hafeez and former England skipper Michael Vaughan have engaged in a war of words, centering on Virat Kohli’s century against South Africa and Ben Stokes’ sensational performance against the Netherlands.
Virat Kohli’s magnificent century on November 5th at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens displayed his resilience and determination. The Indian legend’s gritty, unbeaten 101 off 121 balls on a challenging pitch powered India to a formidable 326/5 in 50 overs.
However, Mohammad Hafeez wasn’t convinced by Kohli’s approach. Speaking on PTV Sports, he accused Kohli of pursuing personal milestones over the team’s needs, highlighting a moment in the 49th over. Hafeez’s criticism prompted a strong response from Michael Vaughan, who defended Kohli’s responsible innings under demanding conditions.
In a surprising turn, Hafeez once again targeted Kohli, this time while praising Ben Stokes. Stokes’ explosive century against the Netherlands, with 108 runs off 84 balls, earned accolades. Hafeez commended Stokes for his selfless approach and took the opportunity to contrast it with Kohli’s performance.
Michael Vaughan emphasized that the challenging conditions in Kolkata and South Africa’s strong bowling attack made Kohli’s performance commendable. Vaughan applauded both Kohli and Stokes, acknowledging their significance in their respective matches.
Virat Kohli’s performance in the ongoing World Cup cannot be understated. With 543 runs from eight innings, an average of 108.60, and a strike rate of 88.29, he’s been consistent and exceptional, notching two centuries and four half-centuries.
