On Tuesday, authorities in Jammu and Kashmir said that intense counter-terror operations were ongoing in the Rajouri neighborhood of Kalakote and involved frequent gunfire exchanges between militants and security troops.
Lt Col Suneel Bartwal, a defense spokesperson based in Jammu, stated that “Technology is being used to monitor the terrorists. Presently, intense operations are under progress.”
“Following successful operations in the same area on September 13, due to continual flow of intelligence, area domination and constant pressure on the terrorists, a specific intelligence about the movement of some suspected individuals was received on October 1 by the police. A joint operation by the Indian Army and police was launched in the general area of Kalakote.”
“Presently, use of technology is being resorted, to monitor the terrorists. Intense operations are under progress,” he added.
Security forces estimate there are two to three heavily armed terrorists in the jungle area where the operation has been initiated, according to official sources, who made the details official.
Terrorists and security personnel got into a fight on Monday evening while being searched in the Kalakote forest.
Following information about suspicious movement, the Army and police blocked off the Broh and Soom forest belt in the Kalakote area early on Monday.
Late in the evening, when the terrorists trying to break the perimeter began to fire on the forces, the search operation evolved into an encounter, according to the officials.
Counter-terrorism actions in recent
In the Rajouri district’s Narla neighborhood on September 12 and 13, security officers shot and killed two terrorists.
On September 11, a terrorist was shot dead, and the previous day, on September 12, a soldier and an army dog named “Kent” lost their lives while performing their duties. Four security people were also hurt in the confrontation, including three soldiers and a special police officer.
Nearly 200 terrorists were waiting across the Line of Control in Pakistan, according to Lt. General Dwivedi, commander of the Northern Army, who spoke at the North Tech Symposium on September 11.
“They are waiting to infiltrate, but our alert troops are deployed at the borders, and we are trying to eliminate them there itself,” he had added.
47 terrorists had been slain in the area in the last nine months. There were at least 37 foreign terrorists among them, while nine were locals.
Terrorism has increased significantly in Rajouri and Poonch, two border districts, since January of this year.
The twin border districts south of Pir Panjal were the scene of three significant terrorist assaults on January 1 in Dhangri, April 20 in Tota Gali in Poonch, and May 5 in the Kandi forests of Rajouri.
10 troops and 7 members of the Hindu community were slain in the three strikes by the terrorists.
