Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge abolished the party’s Uttar Pradesh pradesh, district, municipal, and block committees on Thursday, effective immediately.
The move comes months after the Lok Sabha elections and days after byelections in the state, where the Congress did not field any candidates and instead supported the Samajwadi Party and its INDIA bloc partners on nine seats.
The move appears to be intended to reorganize the Congress’s state unit while also boosting the party at the grassroots level.
The Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) is headed by Ajay Rai.
Mr Kharge has approved a proposal to disband the pradesh, district, city, and block committees of the party’s Uttar Pradesh unit with immediate effect, according to a statement released by Congress general secretary organization K C Venugopal.
