CJI DY Chandrachud Administers Oath to Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and S Venkatanarayana Bhatti as Supreme Court Judges

CJI DY Chandrachud administered the oath of office to Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice S Venkatanarayana Bhatti as Supreme Court judges. With their swearing-in, the working strength of judges in the Supreme Court has increased to 32, surpassing the sanctioned 34. The CJI administered the oath of office to the two new judges in a swearing-in ceremony held at the Supreme court’s auditorium here.

On July 12, the central government cleared Justice Bhuyan and Justice Bhatti for Supreme court judges, announcing their appointments.

On Wednesday, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the elevation of the two judges. On July 5, the Supreme Court collegium, led by the Chief Justice, recommended their appointment as Supreme Court judges.

Justice Bhuyan was appointed as a judge of the Gauhati High Court on October 17, 2011, and was the senior-most judge of his parent High Court (Gauhati). He has been the Telangana High Court’s Chief justice since June 28, 2022.

Justice Bhuyan, a High Court judge with extensive experience in taxation law, has a strong reputation for integrity and competence. He has handled various cases in the Bombay High Court, covering various aspects of law and justice. His judgments cover a wide range of issues, showcasing his expertise in taxation law.

Justice Bhatti, born in 1962, was appointed as the senior-most judge in the High Court of Andhra Pradesh in 2013. The court has not had Supreme Court representation since August 2022. Bhatti was transferred to the High Court of Kerala in March 2019 and served as the chief justice there until June 1, 2023.

Justice Bhatti, a judge and Chief Justice of the High Court of Kerala has extensive experience in various branches of law. His judgments demonstrate his legal acumen and competence. The collegium resolution stated that Justice Bhatti’s appointment will add value to the state of Andhra Pradesh, enhancing his knowledge and experience. He commands a good reputation and possesses integrity and competence.
