Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud delivered advice on Independence Day, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the independence and integrity of the legal process. Speaking at the celebrations organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Justice Chandrachud urged judges and lawyers to conduct themselves in a manner that inspires confidence.
He also extended an invitation to lawyers, encouraging them to reach out to him with any grievances rather than resorting to external avenues. “If you have any grievance, do not run outside the court. You have the head of the family sitting here to address it,” Justice Chandrachud stated, as reported by Live Law.
He acknowledged that some issues may require engagement with the government and assured that he would utilize his influence to find resolutions.
During the event, the CJI announced the expansion of the Supreme Court’s infrastructure, with plans to add 27 new courtrooms, four registrar courtrooms, and enhanced facilities for lawyers and litigants. Additionally, he revealed the intention to construct a new building to accommodate the increased capacity and amenities, including demolishing existing structures if necessary.
Justice Chandrachud also referenced Prime Minister Modi’s earlier Independence Day address, in which the PM praised the Supreme Court for its initiative to translate judgments into regional languages. Modi lauded the apex court’s efforts to enhance accessibility, acknowledging that 9,423 judgments have been translated into regional languages.
In response to Modi’s appreciation, CJI Chandrachud, present among the audience, conveyed his gratitude with a ‘namaste’ gesture. The move to make judgments available in regional languages aligns with the broader emphasis on teaching in native languages.
