In response to Sakshi Malik’s decision to quit wrestling and Bajrang Punia’s return of the Padma Shri, newly elected president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), Sanjay Singh, commented that athletes who wish to engage in politics are free to do so, while those focused on their athletic pursuits have already started preparing. Singh, addressing concerns about his association with Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the former chief accused of sexual harassment, stated that his relationship with the MP has no bearing on his positions within the federation.
The election of Sanjay Singh as the WFI president has triggered controversy, with accusations against Brij Bhushan Singh leading to protests by top wrestlers. Brij Bhushan Singh, asserting his influence over the federation, mentioned that his dominance would continue with Sanjay Singh’s close association.
Bajrang Punia announced the return of his Padma Shri in protest against Sanjay Singh’s election, a move echoed by Deaflympics gold medallist Virender Singh Yadav. Both athletes expressed solidarity with Sakshi Malik. The sports ministry stated that the WFI elections were conducted fairly and democratically, responding to Congress leaders who supported the protesting wrestlers and questioned the government’s stance on the issue.
Brij Bhushan Singh highlighted that national and state-level wrestling events in the country have been on hold for the past 11 months, emphasizing the potential loss of a year for wrestlers if tournaments are not held before December 31.
