Himanta Biswa Sarma, the party’s co-incharge for the upcoming assembly elections in the state, and current CM of Assam announced in a late-night tweet on Monday (26 August) that Champai Soren, the former chief minister of Jharkhand, will join the BJP on Friday.
“Former Chief Minister of Jharkhand and a distinguished Adivasi leader of our country, @ChampaiSoren Ji met Hon’ble Union Home Minister @AmitShah Ji a short while ago. He will officially join the @BJP4India on 30th August in Ranchi,” Hemant Biswa’s posted on X.

With the tribal leader’s abrupt resignation as chief minister, there had been days of conjecture about what would happen next. Sarma’s announcement puts a stop to such rumors. Hemant Soren, the then chief minister of Jharkhand and working president of the JMM, was detained by the ED in January for a suspected land fraud. Champai Soren, a senior JMM member and state government minister, was chosen by the party to succeed Soren as chief minister.
However, in July, days after being granted regular bail by the high court, Hemant Soren returned as the chief minister of the poll-bound state.
Days later, when rumors linking him to the BJP circulated, an upset former CM wrote in a lengthy post on X about his ‘bitter humiliation,’ adding that this compelled him to seek an ‘alternative path.’
The veteran politician also stated how he now had ‘three options’: retirement from politics, forming a separate political outfit, or find a ‘companion on this path, then to travel further with him.’
