CBSE Proposes Significant Changes to Class 10 and 12 Curriculum: Here’s What You Need to Know

According to the report, the  CBSE put forward the proposal to introduce three languages in Class 10 instead of two, with at least two mandatory Indian languages.

Aside from that, under the Class 10 passing criterion, the CBSE recommended increasing the number of subjects required to pass from five to ten.

The CBSE proposed that students in Class 12 learn two languages rather than one, with the requirement that at least one of them be native Indian languages. Students will now have to pass six subjects rather than five.

CBSE New Rules 2024: An Overview

As illustrated in the National Education Policy 2020, the report further added that the CBSE’s proposed changes are integral to its larger effort to present a national credit framework in school education. Its structure expects to create academic parity between vocational and general education.

In any case, there is no organised credit system in the traditional school curriculum. As per the CBSE proposition, a full academic year would comprise 1,200 notional learning hours or 40 credits.

In any case, there is no formal credit system in the traditional school curriculum. According to the CBSE, a whole academic year consists of 1,200 notional study hours, or 40 credits.

CBSE New Rules for 2024: National Learning

The CBSE used the phrase “National Learning” in the plan, which refers to the expected time necessary for a typical student to complete specified learning objectives.

To pass, a student must complete 1,200 study hours in a single year, with a certain amount of hours given to each topic. The hours include both academic instruction in-house and extracurricular, experiential, or non-academic learning.

The Academic Bank of Credits will digitally record the credits that students have obtained, and it may be accessed via an  associated Digilocker account. The credits would be ‘independent’ of the grades that students get, as indicated by an official CBSE report.

CBSE New Rules: Additional

To carry out this endeavor, the CBSE recommended adding new subjects to secondary and higher school curriculum, which would also include vocational and transdisciplinary courses in addition to the current subject list. Students would be required to pass 10 courses, including three languages and seven main topics, rather than the existing five subjects, which comprise two languages and three key subjects such as social studies, math, and science.

Furthermore, two of the three essential languages must be Indian. According to the source, the seven required courses for Class 10 are mathematics and computational thinking, physical education and well-being, social science, science, art education, vocational education, and environmental education.

Students in Classes 10 and 12 would be required to complete six topics instead of the existing five. One of the two languages should be the Indian native tongue. Before the end of last year, the CBSE delivered a proposal outlining changes to the academic framework of Classes 9, 10, 11, and 12 to all of its affiliated schools. They have until December 5, 2023, to evaluate the plan and submit input.
