Smriti Singh, widow of Captain Anshuman Singh, emotionally accepted the posthumous Kirti Chakra awarded to her husband, who lost his life in July 2023 while serving. President Droupadi Murmu, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, presented India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award to Captain Singh.
Reflecting on their love story, Smriti fondly recalled meeting Anshuman in college and their quick connection. After years of a long-distance relationship, they married in February 2023 following his graduation from Armed Forces Medical College.

She recounted their last conversation on July 18, where they excitedly discussed their future plans of building a home and starting a family. The next morning, she received the devastating news of his passing.
Speaking about the trauma and disbelief following his death, Smriti shared, “For hours, we couldn’t accept it. Even now, it’s hard to believe. But holding the Kirti Chakra, I know it’s true. He sacrificed himself heroically.”
Captain Singh displayed remarkable courage during a fire incident at Siachen, risking his life to save fellow soldiers trapped in a fire. Despite severe burns, he bravely attempted to retrieve critical medicines from the blaze but tragically succumbed to his injuries.
