In a remarkable event, a couple from Ontario, Britteney and Chance Ayres, welcomed their fifth child, a baby boy named Sonny, on October 23 at Cambridge Memorial Hospital in Cambridge, Ontario. The extraordinary aspect of this birth was the baby’s astounding weight of over 14 pounds and 8 ounces, making him the largest newborn recorded in Canada since 2010. Sonny also measured an impressive 55 centimeters in length, further adding to the astonishment.
Proud father Chance Ayres expressed his disbelief, stating, “Oh, it was dumbfounding. I never thought in a million years [he’d] be 14.5 pounds.” The entire delivery room was filled with excitement and cheers from medical staff, akin to the jubilation that follows a major sports victory. “It was a mind-blowing experience,” Chance added, comparing it to the Toronto Maple Leafs winning the Stanley Cup, with everyone jumping and celebrating.
Even the medical professionals were taken by surprise, with doctors and nurses placing bets on the baby’s weight before the delivery. Despite having had two previous siblings born at over 13 pounds, Sonny’s birth weight was unprecedented. “When they actually said 14.8, we all just kind of stopped and stared at each other, and then next thing you know, it was like – wow, this is crazy,” Chance Ayres recounted.
The arrival of Sonny Ayres, breaking records with his remarkable birth weight, is undoubtedly a momentous occasion for the Ayres family and the medical community. This joyous event will be remembered for years to come.
