The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) informed the Rajya Sabha that during the last three years, the number of Indian students going to Canada for higher education has skyrocketed, with as many as 4.27 lakh students enrolling in Canadian colleges in 2023.
With 4,27,085 Indian students pursuing school there in 2023, Canada became the most sought-after location for these students. The USA, which attracted 3,51,106 Indian students, trailed closely behind.
There were 2,47,325 Indian students enrolled at UAE universities, which is a sizable number of Indian students. Data presented in the Rajya Sabha on August 8, 2024, showed that Germany and Russia ranked second and third, respectively, with 24,474 and 25,278 Indian students.
Australia remained a popular choice, with 1,24,829 Indian students studying there. Approximately 1,20,000 Indian students were admitted to the UK. Georgia, the Kyrgyz Republic, and Kazakhstan, with 9,785, 16,500, and 16,254 Indian students, respectively, completed the top 10.
Kirti Vardhan Singh, Minister of State (MoS), MEA in a written reply on Thursday to Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury’s query regarding the number of Indian students studying in Canada, said, “As per information obtained from the website of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the Indian student intake at Canadian universities has increased over the last three years.”
Chowdhury had inquired whether the number of Indian students’ intake in Canadian universities has dipped in recent years due to strained relations with Canada. The number of Indian students choosing to study and live there has continued to rise.
Data presented in Parliament in February revealed that among the 403 Indian students who have died abroad since 2018, 91 were in Canada — the highest number for any country. The MEA data also highlighted that a total of 13,18,955 Indian students went abroad to study in 2023, spread across 68 different countries. This figure marks the highest number in the past three years, with 11,58,702 students going abroad in 2021 and 9,07,404 in 2022.
