Cabinet’s Green Light: Mumbai-Indore to Get Rail Link

The new railway line project under the Ministry of Railways has been authorized by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), which is led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

The project has an approximate total cost of Rs. 18,036 crore. Indian Railways would benefit from improved mobility and direct connection as well as increased efficiency and service dependability from the proposed new line between Indore and Manmad.

The initiative aligns with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji’s Vision of a New India, which aims to create the local population “Atmanirbhar” via comprehensive development that will increase jobs and chances for self-employment.

The project is the outcome of the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which enables seamless multi-modal connectivity for the flow of people, products, and services. Integrated planning made this feasible.

The project, which spans six districts across the states of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, would add around 309 kilometers to the current Indian Railway network.

As part of this project, 30 new stations will be built, improving connection to Barwani’s ambitious district. The approximately 30,000 people living in 1,000 communities will have access to the New Line initiative.

By creating a quicker route between the Western and South-Western parts of the country and Central India, the project will boost tourism in the area. This is expected to boost tourism to the Sri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple and other tourist and religious destinations in the Ujjain – Indore area.

The project would link the JNPA gateway port and other state ports directly to the Pithampur Auto Cluster, which is home to 700 small and medium-sized businesses and 90 big units. Additionally, the project would offer direct link to the areas in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra that produce millet and onions, thus facilitating the transportation of the latter to the northern and southern regions of the nation.

This is an important route for the delivery of goods such as farm products, fertilizer, containers, iron ore, steel, cement, and POL. The capacity enhancement operation will result in an extra freight flow of about 26 MTPA (Million Tonnes Per Annum). Railways, as an environmentally friendly and energy efficient mode of transportation, will help the country achieve climate goals while also lowering logistics costs, reducing oil imports (18 crore Litres) and CO2 emissions (138 crore Kg), which is equivalent to planting 5.5 crore trees.
