The BJP has set a lofty goal of winning 400 of the 543 Lok Sabha seats in the forthcoming elections, and it is considering all options, including bringing in leaders from other parties, to achieve it, sources told NDTV.
At a key strategic meeting on Tuesday, BJP President JP Nadda delegated varied tasks to the party’s general secretaries. Vinod Tawde, the BJP General Secretary, will lead the joining committee.
“This committee will explore the possibility of bringing influential leaders and sitting MPs from other parties to the BJP. The decision will be taken based on the person’s influence in the constituency and his or her ability to win elections,” a source said, adding that the party may explore this option particularly in seats where it does not feel it has a candidate capable of winning.
The decision is also consistent with the party’s aim on the 160 seats it lost in the past election.
The Congress, led by Rajiv Gandhi, was the only party to reach 400 seats in the Lok Sabha in 1984. That election also marked the last time a party obtained a majority on its own, until the Narendra Modi-led BJP took office in 2014.
Party General Secretary Radhamohan Das Aggarwal has been tasked with creating the vision document for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Sunil Bansal and other general secretaries will handle the election campaign, publicity, and other associated activities, while Dushyant Gautam will host Buddhist conferences around the country to inform people about the work of the Narendra Modi administration.
BJP head Nadda met with party general secretaries and Union ministers Dharmendra Pradhan, Bhupendra Yadav, Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Mansukh Mandaviya. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also participated via video conferencing.
