The first list of candidates for the upcoming Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh Assembly elections has been made public by the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). Both of these states would present an enormous obstacle to the JP Nadda-led party, particularly in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections.
After Jyotiraditya Scindia rebelled and left the administration led by Congress leader Kamal Nath, which resulted in Nath’s defeat, the BJP took control of Madhya Pradesh. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, a BJP leader, was appointed Chief Minister as a result of the events.
In the 2018 assembly elections in Chhattisgarh, the BJP won only 15 of the 90 seats in the Chhattisgarh Assembly while the Congress won 68 of them. As a result, Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel has maintained his position as chief minister.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, the BJP was able to reverse the situation in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh by winning 28 of the 29 seats in Madhya Pradesh and nine of the 11 constituencies in Chhattisgarh.

The BJP has acknowledged that the outcomes of the assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Mizoram serve as a litmus test before the approaching 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, where the BJP is vying for a third consecutive term.
Notably, the BJP was only effective in gaining power in Madhya Pradesh after overthrowing the elected Kamal Nath administration out of the five states that would have elections in November–December 2023.
Madhya Pradesh Assembly polls in 2023
In Madhya Pradesh’s 230-member parliament, the Congress won 114 seats in 2018, becoming the state’s largest party.
The 39 candidates on the BJP’s initial list for the state assembly elections were announced on Thursday.
In Madhya Pradesh, the BJP has fielded candidates from Sabalgarh, Priyanka Meena, Chachaoura, Chhatarpur, Jabalpur Purba (SC), Nirmala Bhuriya, Petlawad, Jhabua (ST), Alok Sharma, Bhopal Uttar, and Bhopal Madhya, among others.
According to the list made public, the BJP has so far fielded five women, eight members of scheduled castes, and thirteen members of scheduled tribes.
Chhattisgarh Assembly Polls 2023
The BJP has put up candidates in Chhattisgarh including Vijay Baghel, a member of the Lok Sabha from Patan, Bhulan Singh Maravi, a representative from Premnagar, Laxmi Rajwade, a member of the SC from Saraipali, Sarla Kosaria, Alka Chandrakar, Gita Ghasi Sahu, and a member of the ST from Bastar, among others.
The BJP’s list for Chhattisgarh includes five women, ten candidates from the Scheduled Tribes category, and one candidate from the Scheduled Castes category, according to the IE report.
