Benjamin Netanyahu’s Residence Hit in Drone Attack

A drone was launched at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s home in Caesarea on Saturday, just hours after Hamas commander Yahya Sinwar was killed.

Mr Netanyahu’s spokeswoman said he was not present and there were no casualties in the attack on his home. “An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was launched toward the prime minister’s mansion in Caesarea. The prime minister and his wife were not present, and no one was injured in the event, according to a statement from his office.

Earlier, the Israeli military had said that the drone was launched from Lebanon and it had hit a building. Two more drones that crossed into Israeli territory were intercepted, the military was quoted as saying by Reuters.

The drone attack was not immediately claimed by Hezbollah, which has been trading fire with Israel since last October, or any other militant group.

Israel is also at war in Lebanon with Hamas ally Hezbollah. Since the October 7 attack, Israel has traded rocket fire with Lebanon, sending ground troops across the border last month.

The drone attack comes a day after the Israeli military announced that it had destroyed Hezbollah’s regional command center with an air strike. Since late September, the battle has killed at least 1,418 people in Lebanon, according to an AFP compilation of Lebanese health ministry numbers, though the true toll is likely higher.

Meanwhile, Lebanese authorities said that two individuals were killed in an Israeli strike on Saturday in Jounieh, north of Beirut, the first since Hezbollah and Israel began exchanging fire last year. The health ministry said a “Israeli enemy raid” hit a car in Jounieh, with Lebanese state media reporting the incident on a crucial highway connecting the capital to the country’s north.

The Middle East’s tripartite conflict is certain to worsen after Sinwar was murdered in an Israeli raid in southern Gaza. Sinwar, the mastermind of the October 7 bombings that killed more than 1,200 Israelis and transported more than 250 hostages into Gaza, took over as chairman of Hamas after the death of its leader Ismail Haniyeh.
