Bashar Al-Assad Falls, Rebels Seize Control

After President Bashar al-Assad’s administration fell due to a swift onslaught by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), formerly known as the Al-Nusra Front, and its allies, the future of Syria remains uncertain.

The Syrian opposition forces now control the capital city of Damascus, while President Bashar al-Assad has reportedly fled the country. According to Russian media, the ousted leader has been granted asylum in Moscow. The Syrian rebel forces said that Damascus was now free of the ‘tyrant Bashar al-Assad’, announcing a “new era for Syria”.

Syrian opposition troops allegedly liberated all captives from Damascus’ notorious Sednaya jail, declaring the “end of the era of tyranny in the prison of Sednaya”.

Meanwhile, Syrians demolished the monument of Assad’s father, Hafez, in Damascus, signaling the end of the Assad family’s 50-year reign.

Early on Sunday, the rebels said that they had taken complete control of the vital city of Homs, launching a significant onslaught on President al-Assad’s 24-year rule. Rebels celebrated their win by firing into the air, while others removed pictures of the Syrian president.

Notably, Syrian opposition forces commanded by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) captured four important cities in one day: Daraa, Quneitra, Suwayda, and Homs.

Russia has requested an emergency session of the UN Security Council to discuss the situation in Syria, following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad. The UNSC is expected to convene for an emergency closed-door meeting on Monday afternoon.
