Avesh Khan Reveals: Gambhir ‘Speaks Less, But…’—Inside the New Coach’s Approach

Earlier this month, the BCCI appointed Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team. This decision came after India’s T20 World Cup win under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, marking Rahul Dravid’s last assignment with the team.

Unlike Dravid’s calm approach, Gambhir is known for his directness and honesty. His straightforward style is expected to bring a fresh perspective to leading the Indian team.

To shed light on Gambhir’s coaching style, India’s pacer Avesh Khan, who played under Gambhir at Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL, shared insights. According to Avesh, Gambhir focuses intensely on maximizing players’ potential and fosters a team-first mentality.

“He doesn’t speak much in meetings but effectively communicates tasks and goals,” Avesh explained. “He emphasizes giving your best and always aiming to outperform opponents.”

Under Gambhir’s mentorship, Lucknow Super Giants reached playoffs in 2022 and 2023 before he moved to Kolkata Knight Riders, where he helped them win the IPL title this year.

Gambhir is set to join Team India for their upcoming tour to Sri Lanka, which includes three T20Is and three ODIs. Notably, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli may not participate to manage their workload ahead of a busy Test season.

India’s season will start with a Test series against Bangladesh, followed by a T20I series, highlighting Gambhir’s debut as head coach.
