Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, gave the state police instructions on Tuesday to prosecute Rahul Gandhi for “provoking crowd” in response to Congressmen being prevented from entering Guwahati during the current Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.
“These are not part of Assamese culture. We are a peaceful state. Such ‘naxalite tactics’ are completely alien to our culture. I have instructed @DGPAssamPolice to register a case against your leader @RahulGandhi for provoking the crowd & use the footage you have posted on your handles as the evidence,” the Assam CM wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Nearly 5,000 Congress members, including Rahul Gandhi, were apprehended in Guwahati on Tuesday as the party resumed its annual ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ in Assam. Following this, party members battled with police officers and burst through police barricades. Cops used lathi-charge to disperse the crowds.
Addressing a crowd near the Guwahati border, Rahul Gandhi stated that his party members would never breach the rules and disrupt law and order; but, “this does not imply that we are weak.”
“The Assam Chief Minister, Union Home Minister, and Prime Minister can breach the regulations, but we (Congress) would never do so. However, this does not imply that we are weak. “Congress workers are ‘Babbar Sher’,” he remarked, standing on a bus.
Before heading for Guwahati, the former Congress president claimed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had asked the Assam president Minister to prevent him from meeting with students today.
