Apply Now for the 2025 Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme: Key Details Inside

The Japanese Embassy in India has begun accepting applications for the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme (JET Programme). Candidates can apply until December 6, 2024.

The JET Programme is an opportunity for young college graduates to assist with international exchange and foreign language education throughout Japan as Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs). Participants employed as ALTs are placed in schools or local boards of education. ALTs assist Japanese teachers with English lessons are thus involved in the preparation of teaching materials and in extracurricular activities such as English clubs.

Eligibility criteria

  • Hold at least a bachelor’s degree or obtain such qualifications by the designated arrival date in July/August.
  • Be an Indian citizen.
  • Have excellent English skills (written and spoken).
  • Be mentally and physically healthy.
  • Not have lived in Japan for six or more years in total in the past 10 years.
  • Have a keen interest in Japan and be willing to deepen their knowledge and appreciation of Japan.

Participation is for a one-year period, starting from the day after arrival in Japan and may extend up to three years or in exceptional cases to a total of five years.

Participations receive a renumeration of approximately 3.36 million Yen (approx. 19.4 lakh) for their first year of appointment.

In Japan, participants are placed in local government agencies and educational institutions. In order to encourage grassroots international contact between Japan and other nations, the Japanese government and local authorities launched the JET Program in 1987. More than 77,000 people from more than 78 countries have participated thus far.This initiative seeks to establish connections between Japanese youth and youth from other countries in order to encourage international interactions at the grassroots level.
