Chief Minister Omar Abdullah told the Jammu and Kashmir assembly during the one-day session on Monday that his government will bolster the people's fight against terrorism because it can only be destroyed with the public's support.  However, he advised the administration to refrain from actions that would cause the union territory's citizens to become hostile.  Additionally, he declared that he would not use this opportunity to call for the union territory to become a state.

"Terrorism or militancy will end when people join us.  Given the outcry against the horror, if we take the right actions, this is the beginning of its demise.  We shouldn't do something that will make people angry.  If people support us, we can put an end to militancy, but we cannot stop a terrorist with a gun.  "I believe the time has arrived," he remarked.

For the first time, Srinagar's Jamia Masjid observed a two-minute silence before Friday prayers in remembrance of the deceased, Abdullah added, referring to the protest against the Pahalgam terror attack in the union territory.

"We are able to comprehend its significance.  The chief minister declared, "We will work to make this change stronger." Abdullah went on to tell the assembly that calling for the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir was not appropriate at this time.

"I won't want statehood at this time.  What face can I use to demand that Jammu and Kashmir become a state after Pahalgam?  We have discussed statehood in the past and will continue to do so, but he added, "It would be dishonorable for me to go to the central government and tell them that 26 people have died. Now grant me statehood."
