Mark Carney, who recently became Canada’s 24th Prime Minister, has called a snap election for April 28, seeking a strong mandate to counter US President Donald Trump’s new tariffs. Originally scheduled for October, the election was advanced as Carney aims to capitalize on his rising popularity and economic expertise.  

Carney, a former central banker, called Trump’s tariffs an “unjustified” attack on Canada’s sovereignty, emphasizing the need for leadership to secure the country’s economy. He requested the Governor General to dissolve Parliament, which was approved. Carney’s leadership comes despite having no prior political experience, with the Liberal Party relying on his economic credentials to navigate trade tensions.  

With just five weeks to campaign, polls show the Liberals slightly ahead of the opposition Conservatives. Analysts suggest the focus has shifted from change to leadership, giving Carney an edge in rallying support. The Liberals have been in power since 2015.
