Ajit Pawar’s Surprising Take on Baramati Elections: ‘I Feel It …’

Ajit Pawar, Maharashtra’s deputy chief minister and NCP chairman, expressed regret on Tuesday over the “Pawar versus Pawar” electoral contest in Baramati during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The Baramati Lok Sabha seat, which has been a stronghold of Sharad Pawar for decades, featured an intriguing battle between senior Pawar’s daughter Supriya Sule and his estranged nephew’s wife Sunetra Pawar.

For Sharad Pawar, who had lost his party and the majority of his MLAs to Ajit Pawar, it was not only a prestige battle, but also a test of his power and importance in state politics.

Sharad Pawar easily won this contest, with Supriya Sule receiving 51.85% of the votes and Sunetra Pawar receiving only 40.64%. In fact, Sharad Pawar outperformed his estranged nephew by winning eight Lok Sabha seats, his highest performance in Maharashtra. Despite being a member of the state’s BJP-led government alliance, Ajit Pawar was only able to win one seat.

Reflecting on the Lok Sabha battle, Ajit Pawar said one should not allow politics to enter home. “I love all my sisters. One shouldn’t allow politics to enter homes. I made a mistake in fielding Sunetra against my sister. This shouldn’t have happened. But the parliamentary board (of NCP) made a decision. Now I feel it was wrong,” Ajit Pawar told Marathi news channel Jai Maharashtra.
