The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, Sweden, announced on Tuesday that John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton had won the Nobel Prize in Physics.
According to the official announcement, this year’s Nobel Laureates in Physics have developed techniques that serve as the foundation for today’s potent machine learning using tools from physics.
An associative memory, developed by John Hopfield, is capable of storing and reconstructing images as well as other patterns in data. Thanks to a technique developed by Geoffrey Hinton, images can be identified with precision by automatically identifying attributes in the data.
