AI Breakthrough: BTSbot Identifies First Supernova

The first supernova has been successfully found, identified, and classed using a novel artificial intelligence (AI) technique and a totally automated procedure. These tools could relieve astronomers of tedious tasks, allowing them more time to create and test novel universe-explanation concepts.

The artificial intelligence tool’s name is BTSbot, and no, the researchers are not fans of the enormously popular South Korean boy band. Bright Transient Survey Bot, or BTSBot for short, was created by an international team of academics at Northwestern University. The bot might even be able to avoid human errors in addition to drastically speeding up the analysis and classification of new supernovas.

According to the university, evaluating and classifying potential supernovae. The development of this tool means that researchers can redirect this time to other responsibilities.

Supernovae are currently found via a procedure that combines human and computer labour. BTSbot can basically eliminate human involvement from this process, enabling discovery and analysis without it. It was trained using over 1.4 million historical photos from 16,000 astronomical sources.

“For the first time ever, a series of robots and AI algorithms has observed, then identified, then communicated with another telescope to finally confirm the discovery of a supernovae. This represents an important step forward as further refinement of models will allow the robots to isolate specific subtypes of stellar explosions. Ultimately, removing humans from the loop provides more time for the research team to analyse their observations and develop new hypotheses to explain the origin of the cosmic explosions that we observe,” said Adam Miller, who led the researcher, in a press statement.
