India’s opener, Shubman Gill, achieved a remarkable feat during the World Cup match against New Zealand by becoming the fastest batter to reach 2,000 runs in ODI cricket. Gill accomplished this milestone in just 38 innings, surpassing South Africa’s Hashim Amla, who took 40 innings to achieve the same record. The 24-year-old Gill has accumulated six centuries and ten half-centuries in his 37 ODI matches for India. Despite his strong start in the match against New Zealand, Shubman Gill was dismissed for 26 off 31 deliveries.
Shubman Gill’s milestone moment came in the seventh over of India’s run chase against New Zealand when he emphatically dispatched a delivery from Trent Boult to the boundary, needing just 14 runs to reach the 2,000-run mark. Gill’s rapid ascent in ODI cricket, particularly in the ongoing year, has been remarkable, making him the highest run-scorer in the calendar year with 1325 runs in 25 matches.
Shubman Gill faced a challenging start to the 2023 World Cup due to a bout of dengue fever, causing him to miss India’s initial two matches against Australia and Afghanistan. He made a comeback in a high-profile encounter against Pakistan, where he scored 16 runs.
In the same game, India’s Mohammed Shami made history by becoming the first Indian to claim two five-wicket hauls in a World Cup tournament. Shami’s remarkable figures of 5/54 against New Zealand, despite it being his first match in the ongoing World Cup after sitting on the bench for four successive matches, added to the significance of his achievement.
Shami also surpassed Anil Kumble to become India’s third-highest wicket-taker in ODI World Cups. Thanks to Shami’s outstanding performance, India managed to dismiss New Zealand for 273 runs, despite a strong century from Daryl Mitchell (131) and a resilient knock from Rachin Ravindra (75).
