A recent study conducted by Highland Titles has unveiled some surprising findings regarding the attractiveness of different accents around the world. While accents often add charm and personality to individuals, the New York accent was ranked as the “least attractive” in the study, leaving some native New Yorkers reconsidering their Tinder profiles.
Study Highlights
The study involved surveying 1,000 Americans about the accents they find most and least attractive. Here are some key highlights:
Most Attractive Accents:
- Australian
- Scottish
- London(ish?)
- Irish
- French
- Italian
- Welsh
- Brummie (Birmingham, UK)
Least Attractive Accents:
- New York
- Boston
- American Midwestern
- Canadian
- American Southern
- Spanish
- German
- Yorkshire
Interestingly, the top three spots for the “least attractive” accents were all American, with Boston and American Midwestern following the New York accent.
Dating Preferences
The study also revealed that accent preferences can play a significant role in dating. Over 75 percent of participants attracted to women expressed a preference for someone with an accent, while 67 percent of those attracted to men shared the same sentiment. This suggests that embracing diversity in dating, even beyond one’s local area, can lead to more meaningful connections.
Annoying Accents
In addition to attractiveness, the study also touched upon which accents participants found most annoying. Notably, the accents that were considered “least attractive” were often linked to being the most annoying as well. New York, Boston, and Midwestern accents were frequently associated with annoyance. A previous survey from 2022 conducted by language learning platform Preply also labeled the Boston accent as the “most annoying.”
Celebrities and Annoying Voices
The study didn’t spare celebrities from scrutiny when it came to annoying voices. Interestingly, Fran Drescher, known for her distinctive voice, topped the list of celebrities with the “most annoying” voices. Kim Kardashian and the late Gilbert Gottfried followed closely.
British accents, which are generally well-received worldwide, also had their share of scrutiny. James Corden found himself in the top ten most annoying celebrity accents, ranking eighth behind Donald Trump. Idris Elba, on the other hand, was voted as the celebrity with the most attractive voice.
