IIT Madras Launches School of Sustainability for Interdisciplinary Studies

On October 7, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) opened its new School of Sustainability. The school aims to offer fresh, interdisciplinary sustainability courses, collaborate on research projects to address global issues, and offer a venue for hosting events and showcasing technology that can influence both practice and policy.

Faculty from several Institute departments and research centers will be included in the new School of Sustainability, which has been conceptualized as a Centre of Excellence.

The new school intends to offer a number of sustainability-related capacity building programmes to working professionals both in-person and online, in addition to a minor degree in sustainability and an interdisciplinary masters study in the topic.

According to a statement from IIT Madras, the school’s operations would be centered on fundamental scientific research, technology development and transfer, real-world project implementation, and policy advisory activities.

In addition to the minor course in sustainability that will begin in 2024, the IIT Madras School of Sustainability announced that it will introduce an Integrated Dual Degree Programme (IDDD) on Sustainability in the following three to five years.

Decarbonization, human settlements, modeling and scenario development, and behavioral and industrial change are the four main areas of research and development that the school has also identified. These areas will be the focus of its basic scientific research, translational and product development, pilot implementations, and policy advisory activities.

Long-term support for the nation, industry, and citizens of the world will be provided by the School of Sustainability in a variety of ways, including the creation of well-rounded professionals who will guide the development of resilient and sustainable infrastructure for businesses and communities and serving as a platform to catalyze the transition to a low-carbon world by facilitating the conversion of research and knowledge into products and services.
