Anurag Kashyap Calls Out Bollywood’s ‘Zameendari’ Culture

Renowned filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, known for his bold cinematic narratives, has taken a decisive stance against the prevalent ‘Zameendari’ system in Bollywood. Kashyap, who is currently in the pre-production phase of his upcoming project ‘Bebaak,’ starring the talented Nawazuddin Siddiqui, candidly addressed the issue of industry insiders attempting to exert control over others’ lives.

In a candid conversation with ETimes, the acclaimed director of ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ explained his perspective on the matter, emphasizing his rejection of the sense of ownership within the film industry. Kashyap stated, “I use the word Zameendari more than patriarchy. There is a culture of Zameendari in the industry. I am totally against the sense of ownership and want to own people.”

Kashyap further elaborated on his principled approach, revealing that despite advice from peers to establish contracts with collaborators, he firmly opposes such practices. “I work with so many new people, and everyone gives me one advice, make a contract with them, whoever goes, whoever earns money, share it with them. But I don’t believe in it; I will not make anyone my slave. I let everyone go. And I push everyone out if they don’t go,” he declared.

Highlighting the broader context of his observation, Kashyap commented, “A lot of new people are empowering, but many still believe in ownership, that I gave you a chance, don’t do this, don’t do that. So yes, both things exist. And not just in the film industry. It exists everywhere in the world. It exists in every business.”

Anurag Kashyap’s candid remarks have shed light on an age-old issue within Bollywood, drawing attention to the need for a more inclusive and equitable industry culture. As he forges ahead with ‘Bebaak,’ his commitment to breaking free from the ‘Zameendari’ system serves as a bold statement in an industry marked by tradition and change.
