Combat Stress Eating with These 3 Healthy Foods, Say Nutrition Experts

Stress has become an increasingly prevalent aspect of modern life, and its effects on physical and mental health are well-documented. To tackle stress, individuals often resort to unhealthy habits, such as stress eating, which can lead to adverse consequences like overeating, digestive problems, and weight gain. In a bid to address this issue, nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar recently shared three foods on Instagram that can serve as healthier alternatives to combat stress eating, replacing sugary and carb-laden options.

  1. Peanuts: Peanuts contain essential nutrients like vitamin B6 and magnesium. These nutrients can help prevent feelings of bloating often associated with stress eating. Consider having a handful of peanuts as a mid-afternoon snack.
  2. Cashew Nuts: Rich in iron and magnesium, cashew nuts can provide a much-needed energy boost when you’re feeling low. They can be consumed before bedtime, ideally with a glass of milk.
  3. Dry Coconut: Dry coconut promotes a feeling of satiety, aiding in better management of stress eating. It contains lauric acid, which can benefit hair and skin health. You can consume dry coconut with jaggery or as a chutney alongside your lunch.

In addition to these recommendations, Richa Anand, Chief Dietician at Dr. LH Hiranandani Hospital in Mumbai, emphasized the importance of a balanced diet in alleviating stress. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fatty fish, walnuts, and flaxseeds, are known for supporting brain function and reducing stress.

Anand also suggested incorporating whole grains, leafy vegetables, and berries into one’s diet to obtain essential vitamins and antioxidants crucial for combating stress. Meals rich in magnesium, including nuts, seeds, and dark chocolate, can help relax muscles and promote an overall sense of calmness and tranquility.

Shweta Gupta, Unit Head of Dietetics at Fortis Hospital in Shalimar Bagh, added that mindful eating practices can be effective in counteracting stress. These practices involve deep breathing, thoughtful food choices, focusing attention on meals, and chewing food slowly, all of which contribute to improved digestion and stress management.

As the pressures of modern life continue to impact individuals, making mindful dietary choices and incorporating stress-relieving foods can play a pivotal role in promoting overall well-being and reducing the negative effects of stress.
