Ex-Australia Captain Casts Doubt on Ashwin’s World Cup Spot

In the lead-up to the highly anticipated ICC World Cup 2023, the cricket world is buzzing with speculation and analysis. Among the hot topics of discussion is the unexpected twist in the fate of veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who might be on the brink of a World Cup comeback.

With the sudden absence of all-rounder Axar Patel due to an injury, Ashwin has seen a glimmer of hope to re-enter the Indian cricketing spotlight. Known for his mastery of Indian conditions, Ashwin’s performance in the recent series decider against Australia in Indore has raised eyebrows and strengthened his case for a World Cup spot.

The return of cricketing giants Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma has infused renewed energy into the Indian squad as they prepare to face Australia in their final 50-over contest before the ICC World Cup. Ashwin, initially overlooked by selectors for the World Cup, now finds himself in contention to make the Indian roster.

However, the former Australian captain, Aaron Finch, has offered a different perspective. Speaking candidly to Star Sports before the 3rd One Day International (ODI) between India and Australia, Finch expressed his doubts about Ashwin securing a spot in the final 15-member squad for the World Cup.

“I think he (Ashwin) might struggle to make it to the final 15,” Finch stated boldly. Nevertheless, Finch acknowledged Ashwin’s immense cricketing experience, suggesting a potential mentor role for the senior spinner. “Because Ashwin is somebody that stands up in big games, whether it’s a Test match or a T20 game, he has done it all throughout his career. So I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s there at the moment as a mentor around the group, but I don’t see him making that last 15, unfortunately,” added Finch, who led Australia to T20 World Cup glory in 2021.

Finch’s remarks come on the heels of Ashwin’s impressive performance against Australia. He outfoxed premier batter Marnus Labuschagne and even had David Warner attempting to bat right-handed in a desperate attempt to counter him. Ashwin’s brilliant bowling helped India secure a convincing 99-run victory, taking a 2-0 lead in the series.

As the World Cup draws near, the debate surrounding Ashwin’s inclusion in the squad continues. While some believe in his ability to rise to the occasion, others, like Finch, remain skeptical. Whether Ashwin ultimately dons the Indian jersey in the upcoming World Cup or assumes a mentorship role, his cricketing journey remains one of the captivating narratives of the cricketing world.
