UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak Orders Ban on American XL Bully Dogs After Fatal Attack

A tragic dog attack in central England has claimed a man’s life, leading UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to pledge action on dangerous dog breeds. The victim was fatally injured by two dogs near Birmingham, and a 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of having dogs that were dangerously out of control.

Emergency services responded to a call regarding a man seriously injured in a dog attack. Despite their best efforts, the victim, who sustained multiple life-threatening injuries, could not be saved and was pronounced dead after reaching the hospital. Staffordshire Police arrested the owner of the dogs involved.

While the police are determining the exact breeds of the dogs, Prime Minister Sunak mentioned that an American bully XL was suspected in this tragic incident. The American bully XL is known for its stocky and muscular appearance.

The issue of dangerous dogs has gained national attention in the UK due to a series of attacks. In a separate incident, an 11-year-old girl was seriously injured by an American bully XL and Staffordshire bull terrier crossbreed puppy, prompting Interior Minister Suella Braverman to seek “urgent advice” on whether to ban the American bully XL breed.

Prime Minister Sunak expressed his concerns and pledged to address the problem urgently. He emphasized that this issue is not solely about poorly trained dogs but rather a recurring pattern of dangerous behavior. Sunak tasked ministers with collaborating with police and experts to define the breed responsible for these attacks and ultimately outlaw it.

The UK already has bans in place for specific dog breeds, including pit bull terriers, Japanese tosas, dogo Argentinos, and Fila Brasileiros. The American bully XL, while related to the pit bull terrier, is not legally restricted. It is not recognized as a distinct breed by the country’s Kennel Club, which complicates legislative efforts.

Sunak stressed the importance of defining the breed involved and stated that the government would work on amending the Dangerous Dogs Act to ban this breed. He expressed the intent to have new laws in place by the end of the year, aiming to prioritize public safety.
