48-Hour Encounter in Anantnag: One Soldier Missing, Two Injured, Three Officers Martyred

An encounter with terrorists that has been going on for more than 48 hours in the Anantnag area of Jammu & Kashmir is said to have left one soldier missing and two others injured. After the army and police launched a coordinated operation to find terrorists in the deep forests of Kokernag, a shootout broke out early on Wednesday morning.

On that day, three officers—two from the Army and one from the police—were slain in the line of duty. The number of terrorist casualties has not changed, according to the latest information.

In their stepped-up counterterrorism operations, the security services are employing new-generation weapons and equipment, such as strike-capable Heron drones.

On the night of September 12–13, the Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police began their joint search operation. In order to find certain terrorists, they reportedly cordoned off the village of Garol.

An thorough search revealed that the terrorists were hiding out in the deep forest’s upper reaches.

Major Aashish Dhonchak and Colonel Manpreet Singh, who was in charge of the search column, made their way through the entrances and challenging terrain of the forest. They reacted when they came under intense fire from the attackers about noon.

Colonel Singh, Major Dhonchak, and DSP Himanyun Bhat were shot and eventually died as a result of their injuries.

The 19 Rashtriya Rifles Unit (19 RR) was commanded by Colonel Manpreet Singh, Sena Medal (Gallantry), and its company commander was Major Aashish Dhonchak, Sena Medal (Gallantry). Deputy Superintendent (DySP) Himanyun Muzamil Bhat worked for the Jammu and Kashmir Police.

On Thursday, Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha paid respect to the army officers in Srinagar.

The Army said that a specialised operation was carried out in the perilous terrain of Kokernag to retrieve the officers’ bodies.
