Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, Abdul Momen, conveyed his heartfelt appreciation for being invited as a guest country at the G20 summit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He expressed that India’s gesture was a significant honor for Bangladesh.
During the summit, Prime Minister Modi encouraged Bangladesh’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, to engage with other world leaders. Momen stated that Bangladesh was proud of this honor and noted that it provided them with a platform to raise important issues concerning the Global South.
“We are very proud, and PM Sheikh Hasina also mentioned that India has honored us by inviting us as the guest country, and we are very thankful to India. They have given us an honor and a privilege to raise the issues of the Global South,” said Abdul Momen.
He further emphasized Bangladesh’s leadership in critical areas such as climate change, women’s empowerment, and disaster management, which were highlighted to the G20 leaders during the summit.
Bangladesh’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, had bilateral talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during her visit to New Delhi. The two countries signed three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), including one on cooperation in Digital Payment mechanisms.
Another MoU focused on renewing the Cultural Exchange Program (CEP) between India and Bangladesh for 2023-2025. A third MoU was signed between the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council (BARC).
The leaders also looked forward to commencing negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which covers trade in goods, services, and investment protection.
The discussions between Prime Minister Modi and Sheikh Hasina encompassed various aspects of bilateral cooperation, including political and security collaboration, border management, trade, connectivity, water resources, energy, development collaboration, and cultural and people-to-people linkages.
The G20 Summit in New Delhi marked India’s first time hosting the event. The country made extensive preparations to showcase its traditions and strengths.
Throughout its presidency, India has been dedicated to addressing issues such as inclusive growth, digital innovation, climate resilience, and equitable global health access. Leveraging its presidency, India is actively contributing to finding collaborative solutions that benefit both its population and global well-being.
The G20 Summit included participation from several countries, including Nigeria, Argentina, Italy, the African Union (represented by Comros), South Africa, the United Kingdom, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the Republic of Korea, Egypt, Australia, the United States, Canada, China, the United Arab Emirates, Brazil, Indonesia, Turkey, Spain, Germany, France, Mauritius, the European Union, and Singapore.
