Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the Congress leader in the Lok Sabha, was suspended from the House today for reportedly abusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and disturbing ministers. This was the first time the Congress leader in Lok Sabha had been suspended. According to individuals, the subject will be submitted to the Privileges Committee.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi proposed Mr Chowdhury’s suspension.
“This House, having taken serious note of Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s gross, deliberate, and repeated misconduct in utter disregard for the House and authority of the Chair, resolves that the matter of his misconduct be referred to the House Committee of Privileges for further investigation and report to the House, and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury be suspended from the service of the House until the Committee submits its report,” he said.
By voice vote, the resolution was approved.
Mr Chowdhury afterwards informed reporters that he had not intended to disrespect Prime Minister Modi.”I had no intention of offending anyone. “I’ve said nothing wrong,” he said.
“Modi ji is sitting ‘nirav’ (silent) on the Manipur issue.” The word ‘Nirav’ implies to be silent. “My intention was not to offend Prime Minister Modi,” he explained. “While Prime Minister Modi did not feel insulted, his darbaris (courtiers) did, and they brought this proposal against me.” “I found out that (the matter) had been referred to the privileges committee, and I’ve been suspended until then,” he explained.
The action was deemed “undemocratic” by Congress.
“First time for speaking against Modi, largest opposition (party) leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury suspended,” Congress whip Manickam Tagore said. Unbelievable. Undemocratic. “Condemn autocracy.”
Earlier today, Mr Chowdhury’s statement to Prime Minister Narendra Modi was removed from the proceedings due to strong complaints from BJP members. Pralhad Joshi had raised a point of order and requested that the Congress member apologize.
Following the rejection of the No-Confidence Motion against the Narendra Modi government, the Speaker stated that two members, Virendra Awasthi of the BJP and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury of the Congress, had violated decorum.
Virendra Awasthi apologized, saying he couldn’t stand nasty comments against the Prime Minister.
