Somalia Athletics Chair Suspended After Runner’s Sluggish 100m Race at World University Games

Somalian runner Nasra Abukar Ali’s remarkably slow 100-meter race at the World University Games in China has led to her country’s athletics federation chairwoman being suspended. The incident raised questions of favoritism as allegations emerged that Ali was selected due to her relation to the athletics body chief Khadijo Aden Dahir. The video of Ali’s sluggish performance went viral, prompting outrage and investigations into the matter.

Sluggish Performance and Outrage

Nasra Abukar Ali, a 20-year-old runner, gained attention for her extraordinarily slow completion of the 100-meter race at the World University Games in China. Ali’s time of more than 21 seconds placed her far behind the winner, who clocked 11.58 seconds. A viral video showcased her struggling to finish the race, remaining out of frame for much of the event.

Suspended Chairwoman and Allegations

Following the outcry over Ali’s performance, Somalia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports suspended Khadijo Aden Dahir, the chairwoman of the country’s athletics federation. There were allegations that Ali’s selection for the competition was influenced by her relation to Aden Dahir. The situation prompted investigations and inquiries into the circumstances surrounding Ali’s participation.

Investigations and Findings

A probe was conducted by Somalia’s National Olympics Committee and revealed that Nasra Abukar Ali was neither a “sports person nor a runner.” Additionally, the investigation accused Khadijo Aden Dahir of “abuse of power, nepotism, and defaming the name of the nation.” The Ministry of Youth and Sports expressed its intention to take legal action against those responsible for falsifying the Somali University Sports Association.

Controversy Surrounding Participation

Somalian Sports Minister Mohamed Barre Mohamud stated that there was no registered Somali University Sports Association in the country. This contradicted claims that runners were sent to the World University Games by the Association of Somali Universities. The situation highlighted discrepancies and concerns about the process of selecting athletes for international competitions.

The sluggish performance of Nasra Abukar Ali in the 100-meter race has triggered a series of events, including the suspension of Somalia’s athletics chairwoman and investigations into potential favoritism. The incident underscores the importance of transparency and fairness in selecting athletes for international competitions, and it raises questions about the credibility of sporting associations involved.
