Indian Building in Surat Surpasses Pentagon as World’s Largest Office Space

In a remarkable feat, a building in Surat, Gujarat has surpassed the Pentagon to become the world’s largest office space, according to a CNN report. Surat, renowned as the gem capital of the world, where 90% of the world’s diamonds are cut, will house the newly-constructed Surat Diamond Bourse. This state-of-the-art building will serve as a comprehensive hub for over 65,000 diamond professionals, including cutters, polishers, and traders.

Spanning across 35 acres of land, the 15-storey building consists of nine interconnected rectangular structures, creating a central spine. With over 7.1 million square feet of floor space, it has become a monumental symbol of Surat’s diamond industry.

The building is set to be officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November this year, marking a momentous occasion for the city and the diamond trade. The construction of this remarkable structure took four years to complete.

Designed by leading Indian architecture firm Morphogenesis, the building complex offers more than just office spaces. The Surat Diamond Bourse includes recreational zones and a spacious parking area, covering a sprawling 20 lakh square feet.

Notably, the Surat Diamond Bourse is a not-for-profit organization promoted by SDB Diamond Bourse, a registered company under section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013. Its primary aim is to establish and promote the diamond trade in Surat, Gujarat.

Mahesh Gadhavi, CEO of the project, highlighted the significance of the building complex, stating that it will save thousands of people from the daily commute to Mumbai by train for business purposes. The Surat Diamond Bourse is poised to become a one-stop destination, revolutionizing the diamond industry and enhancing convenience for professionals in the sector.

The achievement of surpassing the Pentagon in size was not part of the competition brief, as Mr. Gadhavi explained in an interview with CNN. The project’s size was determined by the demand and requirements of the diamond industry.

Prior to its construction, all the offices in the building were purchased by diamond companies, emphasizing the anticipation and enthusiasm surrounding this landmark structure.
