Dr. Rajendra Prasad, India’s first president and a pivotal participant in the country’s liberation movement, will be 141 years old on December 3, 2025. Dr. Prasad was born in 1884 in Ziradei, Bihar, and dedicated his life to serving the nation, making an everlasting influence on Indian history.
Dr. Rajendra Prasad was chosen India’s first President on January 26, 1950, when the country approved its Constitution and declared itself a Republic. He was the longest-serving President in Indian history, serving two terms from 1950 to 1962. In 1962, he received the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian accolade, for his remarkable contribution to the country.
Dr. Rajendra Prasad was born on December 3, 1884, to a humble Kayastha family. Despite minimal circumstances, his family prioritized education. He was an outstanding student who aced the Calcutta University entrance test in 1902 and eventually earned a law degree. In 1915, he received a Doctorate in Law from Allahabad University, reinforcing his academic excellence.
Dr. Prasad joined the Indian freedom movement in 1917 when he was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi during the Champaran Satyagraha. He soon became one of the most trusted leaders of the Indian National Congress. He played an instrumental role in movements like:
- Non-Cooperation Movement (1920)
- Civil Disobedience Movement (1930)
- Quit India Movement (1942)
Dr. Prasad was imprisoned multiple times by the British, including during the Salt Satyagraha (1931) and the Quit India Movement.
Dr. Prasad passed away on February 28, 1963, in Patna, but his legacy continues to inspire millions.
