MHA Reports Crore Saved from Cyber Fraud in 3 Years

The Ministry of Home Affairs has informed Parliament that almost Rs 3,500 crore belonging to roughly 10 lakh complainants has been protected from cyber criminals during the last three years.

“The citizen financial fraud reporting and management system, released in 2021 by the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), was designed to prevent criminals from siphoning off payments. So far, more than Rs 3,431 crore has been saved in over 9.94 lakh complaints,” MoS Home Bandi Sanjay Kumar said the Rajya Sabha in answer to MP Abdul Wahab’s query.

The minister, in a separate answer, also apprised the House that till November 2024, close to 7 lakh sim cards have been blocked for cyber crime. “Till 15.11.2024, more than 6.69 lakh SIM cards and 1,32,000 IMEIs as reported by police authorities have been blocked by Government of India,” MHA said.

Seven joint cyber coordination teams have been constituted from Mewat in Haryana, Jamtara in Jharkhand, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Hyderabad, Telangana, Chandigarh, Vishakapatnam, Andhra Pradesh and Guwahati, Assam. These have emerged as the epicentre of cyber crimes. Nuh in Mewat has replaced Jamtara as the spot from where maximum cyber crime related calls are originating, officials said.

In 11,000 cases, MHA’s I4C has provided assistance to states and UTs to probe cyber crime. The Central Government and service providers have also come up with a mechanism to identify and block incoming spoofed international calls which give the impression that the call has originated in India, MHA said.

Cyber crime is also expected to be one of the main agenda items when top police officials of the country meet in Bhubaneswar from November 29 to December 1. The DG- IG conference will also have Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah in attendance.

PM Modi recently raised the issue of digital arrests during his Mann ki Baat address. He warned against the dangers of “digital arrests” and emphasised that no investigative agency ever establishes contact over the phone or video call to demand money or interrogate people.

During his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ broadcast, Modi stated that this particular form of cybercrime affects all sections of society. He urged people to adopt the mantra of “stop, think, and take action” when confronted with such a scam.
