As diplomatic ties deteriorated, questions were raised in the Rajya Sabha about Canada’s incapacity to provide protection to Indian embassy staff and consular camps.
In response, the foreign ministry stated that the Indian and Canadian governments are in communication on the status of their bilateral relations. It emphasized the need of respecting each other’s interests, territorial integrity, and sovereignty in order to sustain stable relations.
“In this regard, Government of India has repeatedly urged the Canadian government to take prompt and effective action against anti-India elements operating from its soil,” Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh told the Rajya Sabha.
Singh added: “This includes preventing secessionist and extremist elements from glorifying the assassination of our leaders; issuing threats to our current political leadership and diplomats; disrespecting and vandalizing places of worship; and espousing for the balkanization of India by holding so-called ‘referendums’.”
