Congress politician Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s political debut is expected to begin on Thursday, November 28, when she will take her oath as a member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha with party leader Ravindra Vasantrao Chavan.
Priyanka Gandhi’s victory means that for the first time in decades, all three members of the Nehru-Gandhi family—Sonia, Rahul, and Priyanka—are in Parliament.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra arrived to Parliament with her mother, while her MP brother Rahul Gandhi and husband Robert Vadra were also there for her oath.
Priyanka Gandhi won the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat with a majority of 4,10,931 votes in the recently finished series of byelections, which coincided with the Maharashtra and Jharkhand Assembly elections 2024.
Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi’s brother, gave up the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat after winning it in this year’s Lok Sabha elections while simultaneously securing the family bastion Rae Bareli constituency. Rahul Gandhi’s decision to retire from the Wayanad seat and retain the Rae Bareli constituency after winning both seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in April triggered the Wayanad byelection.
Wayanad, a Congress stronghold, saw a three-way fight between Priyanka Gandhi, the BJP’s Navya Haridas, and Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Sathyan Mokeri.
Priyanka Gandhi ran for the Wayanad seat as part of the United Democratic Front (UDF).
Ravindra Vasantrao Chavan, a Congress politician, won the Nanded Lok Sabha bypoll with 5,86,788 votes after the death of the sitting party MP, Vasantrao Balwantrao Chavan.
The Wayanad victory marks Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s electoral debut, and she will now sit in Lok Sabha alongside her brother Rahul Gandhi, who is also the Leader of Opposition in the House. Their mother, Sonia Gandhi, is a Rajya Sabha member for Rajasthan.
Due to low voter turnout, Priyanka Gandhi garnered 6,22,338 votes, which was fewer than Rahu Gandhi’s total of 647,445 votes in the seat during the April Lok Sabha election. However, her margin of 410,931 votes outstripped his advantage of 364,422, making her first triumph all the more memorable.
