India commemorates the 75th anniversary of its Constitution on November 26th, which is Constitution Day, also known as Samvidhan Divas. This day honors the 1949 ratification of the Indian Constitution, a significant event that influenced the country’s democratic system.

The Constituent Assembly of India, headed by visionary individuals like Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Chairman of the Drafting Committee, finalized the Constitution on this day in 1949 after nearly three years of discussions. It became operative on January 26, 1950, the day the Indian Republic was established.

Samvidhan Diwas, popularly known as Constitution Day, is celebrated annually on November 26.

As the nation reflects on its Constitution today, here are 10 lesser-known facts about the Constitution of India, as compiled by B&B Associates LLP:

  1. Manabendra Nath Roy was the first to propose the idea of forming a Constituent Assembly in 1934, which later became an official demand of the National Congress in 1935.
  2. The Constitution of India was handwritten by Prem Behari Narain Raizada in both Hindi and English, not printed or typed.
  3. Shantiniketan artists, including Beohar Rammanohar Sinha and Nandalal Bose, decorated every page of the handwritten Constitution.
  4. India has the longest Constitution in the world, with 117,369 words. In comparison, Monaco’s Constitution has just 3,814 words.
  5. The original copies of the Constitution of India are preserved in helium-filled cases in the Library of the Parliament of India.
  6. The drafting and publishing of the Constitution of India cost Rs 6.4 million.
  7. It took 2 years, 11 months, and 18 days to complete the final draft of the Constitution.
  8. The first draft of the Constitution saw 2,000 amendments before the final version was adopted.
  9. The original Constitution had 395 Articles, which grew to 470 Articles by 2021, grouped into 25 Parts, 12 Schedules, and five Appendices.
  10. The Constitution of India replaced the Government of India Act, 1935, marking the transition from the Dominion of India to the Republic of India.
