A video of a 21-year-old laborer from a West Bengal hamlet who passed the NEET test with a score of 677 out of 720 went popular on social media.
For the previous two years, Sheikh Sarfaraz supported his family by lifting 400 bricks for ₹300 every day.
He worked from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. to cover his education expenses.
The video has garnered more than 1.3 million views and over 100k likes so far.
In the video, he recalled how he was bullied, saying “aas-paas ke log bolte hain, itni padhai karne ke baad bhi yeh kaam kar raha hai” (the people around me used to say, despite studying so much, I am still working as a labourer).
Sarfaraz’s Inspirational Journey
Sarfaraz lives in a home built under the PM Awas Yojana and supports his family by working with his father as a worker.
Sarfaraz had hoped to enter the National Defence Academy (NDA) after finishing 10th grade. He even passed the first step in 2022, but an injury a month before the interview prevented him from advancing to the final level of the NDA exam.
He went on to say that during the COVID-19 outbreak, he purchased a smartphone with government funding and began to prepare for the NEET examination.
He began watching Physics Wallah’s lessons on YouTube and eventually registered in the course via a discount arrangement.
Sarfaraz enrolled at a dentistry college after passing the NEET test in 2023, but he dropped out since the college did not have dormitory facilities and he did not have enough money to cover his daily expenses.
Despite his low financial situation, he accepted the challenge to pass the NEET test in 2024.
His persistence and hard work have led to his achievement, and he is currently preparing to attend Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College in Kolkata.
