President-elect Donald Trump has named Linda McMahon as his Secretary of Education, despite being initially considered for the Commerce Department. McMahon, a former administrator of the Small Business Administration and co-founder of World Wrestling Entertainment, will reallocate the agency’s functions to the states.
The Education Department is responsible for funding public schools, administering federal student aid programs, and gathering education data. Trump has pledged to dismantle much of its federal oversight, aiming to send education back to the states.
“We will send Education BACK TO THE STATES, and Linda will spearhead that effort,” Trump said in a statement released on Tuesday.
Who is Linda Mcmahon?
During Trump’s first term, from 2017 to 2019, McMahon led the SBA. She and her husband, Vince McMahon, co-founded Capitol Wrestling, which is now known as World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), before entering politics.
The most recent complaint to name both McMahons claimed “systemic and pervasive abuse” of minors within the company.
McMahon gained notoriety in politics as well. In 2010, she was the Republican candidate for the US Senate in Connecticut, but she was defeated by Democrat Richard Blumenthal. McMahon was the head of the board for the America First Policy Institute, a conservative think organization founded in 2021 by Trump associates to advance his agenda, even after the defeat. Alongside billionaire Howard Lutnick, who has been appointed to head the Department of Commerce, she was also a key member of Trump’s transition team.
McMahon lauded Trump’s economic achievements at the recent Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, stating, “President Trump is a job creator and the best friend American workers have had in the White House.”
