Indian Railways’ First Hydrogen Train Set for Trials – Check Speed, Route, and Features

India is set to unveil its first hydrogen-powered train in December 2024, marking a significant milestone for the country’s railways. The train will operate without diesel or electricity, aiming to become a “net zero carbon emitter” by 2030. The train will use water as its primary power source, using hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity.

The byproduct will be only steam and water, resulting in zero harmful emissions. This clean energy approach is expected to set the standard for future trains in India. The hydrogen train is part of the Indian Railways’ ambitious plan to reduce its carbon footprint and eliminate air pollution caused by diesel engines.

It also produces 60% less noise than diesel-powered engines, making it one of the most sustainable forms of transportation. With plans to roll out 35 hydrogen trains nationwide, Indian Railways is preparing for a cleaner, quieter future.

Hydrogen Train Trial Run in India

  • The trial runs on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, covering 90km.
  • Other routes include heritage mountain railways like Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway, and Kalka-Shimla Railway.
  • The train is expected to reach a maximum speed of 140 km/h, suitable for longer routes.

Science Behind Hydrogen Trains

  • Hydrogen fuel cells convert hydrogen gas into electricity through a chemical reaction with oxygen.
  • The train’s motors power the electricity, with water and steam as byproducts.
  • Dedicated water storage facilities will be constructed for operation.

Investment and Infrastructure

  • Each hydrogen train costs Rs 80 crore.
  • Infrastructure updates include hydrogen storage facilities and refuelling stations.

Plans for Nationwide Expansion

  • Indian Railways plans to expand its hydrogen train services to other parts of the country by 2025.
  • The trains will offer comparable speed and passenger capacity to traditional diesel trains.

Future Outlook for Green Railways

  • The launch of India’s hydrogen train marks a pioneering step in sustainable rail transport.
