In Varanasi, 40 unmarried females were labeled pregnant after an anganwadi worker allegedly attempted to swindle public cash.
The girls of Malhiya Village in Gram Panchayat Ramna got a disturbing communication from the Ministry of Child Development notifying them of services available via the Poshan Abhiyaan Yojana.
“Welcome to ‘Poshan Tracker’. As a breastfeeding mother, you can avail services like hot cooked meals or ration, counselling, child health monitoring and breastfeeding support through home visits from Anganwadi Centre,” the message read, triggering anger and panic in the girls’ families.
When they contacted anganwadi worker Sumanlata, she allegedly became defensive and evasive, prompting the families to raise their concerns with the village head.
As per local reports, Sumanlata, under the pretext of linking Aadhaar with their voter IDs, collected Aadhaar photocopies from the girls, then falsely registered them as pregnant to embezzle nutritional materials intended for mothers.
Following complaints from the families, Chief Development Officer Himanshu Nagpal ordered an investigation. He said the Block Development Officer is investigating to verify if any materials were distributed in the names of these girls. Further action will be taken following the investigation’s findings.
