Why Telangana Has Banned Mayonnaise Production and Sale

Following complaints of a possible cause of food illness, the Telangana government on October 30 banned the production, storage, and sale of mayonnaise made from raw eggs for a year with immediate effect.

“As per the observations during enforcement activities and complaints received from the public, Mayonnaise made from raw eggs is suspected to be a cause of food poisoning in multiple incidents in the past few months,” a food safety commissioner’s order stated.

According to press sources, Telangana has seen several cases of food poisoning in recent months, with mayonnaise produced from raw eggs being suspected of being the culprit.

In 2023, Kerala became the first state to ban the production and storage of mayonnaise made from raw eggs after laboratory tests revealed harmful microorganisms.

Mayonnaise (or Mayo) is a thick, creamy sauce made by emulsifying egg yolks with oil, often flavoured with vinegar or lemon juice.

It is commonly used as a side dish or dressing in sandwiches, salads, appetizers, snacks, shawarma and various dishes.
