Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz has announced that Hamas head Yahya Sinwar, who ordered the October 7 attack on Israel, has died, according to preliminary DNA testing.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared after Yahya Sinwar’s death that Israeli forces had given “a blow to evil”. However, he warned that the campaign against Hamas is far from over.
The October 7 strikes, which murdered 1,200 Israelis, were the greatest terrorist attack on the Jewish state and threw the Middle East into turmoil.
“Mass murderer Yahya Sinwar, who was responsible for the massacre and atrocities of October 7, was killed today by IDF soldiers,” Katz said in a statement.
Earlier today, Israeli soldiers claimed the killing of three terrorists during an operation in Gaza. The statement also stated that there was no evidence of hostages in the building where the terrorists were discovered. “The forces that are operating in the area are continuing to operate with the required caution,” the IDF continued, emphasizing their cautious attitude during their mission.
Israel has spared no resources in its year-long manhunt for the Hamas chief, engaging a taskforce of intelligence officers, special operatives, military engineers and surveillance experts under the umbrella of the Israeli Security Agency to eliminate one of the biggest enemies of the Jewish state.
Sinwar, who had long been regarded as a planner of Hamas’ military operations, cemented his power when he was named Ismail Haniyeh’s successor in August. The Israeli military assassinated Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in late July.
Sinwar, born in 1962, was recruited by Hamas’ founder, Sheik Ahmed Yassin, who appointed him chief of an internal security squad known as Al Majd. His mission was to hunt down and punish people suspected of breaking Islamic morals norms or cooperating with Israeli forces, which eventually led to his detention.
He was imprisoned in 1988 for murdering four Palestinians who collaborated with Israel. He spent more than 20 years in an Israeli prison, where he learned Hebrew.
He was released in a prisoner swap in 2011. He had been in favour of armed confrontation with the Jewish state over diplomatic initiatives.
