Every year, Hindus commemorate Valmiki Jayanti. It falls on October 17 this year. The event marks the birth anniversary of Maharishi Valmiki, the author of Ramayan, Lord Ram’s epic and life tale, which recounts his tremendous trek to kingdom and victory over the demon Ravana.
Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated on the full moon of the month of Ashvin. Valmiki’s work, also known as ‘Adikavi’ or the earliest Sanskrit poet, is recognized as part of India’s historic literary history.
